What Is Net Gain/Loss?

Published · Updated

Net gain/loss tells you whether your book of business is growing or shrinking.

What it is

Net gain/loss = policies added − policies lost. Policies are lost to cancellations, non-renewals and customers who move to another agency.

  • A positive number means the book grew: you added more policies than you lost.
  • A negative number means it shrank, even if the team wrote new business every day.

A worked example

Example. Your team writes 50 new auto policies in March, and 60 auto policies cancel or don't renew. Net gain/loss for March is 50 − 60 = −10.

A busy sales month can still shrink the book. To grow, the policies you keep matter as much as the ones you write.

Where you record it

It is not worked out from your sales, because your sales log has only the policies your team wrote, not the ones that left. You type each month's net change as Auto Gain and Fire Gain on the Office tab of the Data window: see Record the office's monthly numbers.

The year's total shows as NET GAIN/LOSS in the Goals window on Home, on Annual, set against your Gain / Loss (#) goal. Auto and Fire are the only product lines with a gain field.
