Sales Contest Ideas for Insurance Offices

Updated

A sales contest is a short race with a clear finish line. It works when everyone knows the rule, can see the score, and has a real chance to win.

What makes a contest work

  • One thing to count. Policies, quotes, second lines or life apps. Not all of them at once.
  • A short window. A week or a month. Long contests lose energy halfway through.
  • A visible score. Update it at least daily, where everyone can see it.
  • More than one way to win. If one person always wins, the rest stop trying.

8 contest ideas

  1. Most quotes this week. Counts the work, not the result, so newer people can win.
  2. Life app sprint. Most life applications in a month. Pulls attention to a line that is easy to forget.
  3. Second line race. Most households that add a second product. Rewards rounding out accounts.
  4. Beat your own record. Each person races their own record for the month. Everyone can win.
  5. Team vs team. Split the office into two teams with mixed experience. The winning team shares the prize.
  6. Bingo card. A card of tasks: a life quote, a review call, a referral ask. First full row wins.
  7. Daily streak. Hit a daily quote count every working day for two weeks.
  8. League with other offices. Compete with offices you know on the same measure, so the whole team pulls in one direction.

Write the rules in three lines

Every contest needs three things written down before it starts:

  1. What counts, and when it counts (for example, a policy counts when it is issued).
  2. The dates it runs.
  3. The prize, and whether a cancelled policy removes the point.

Work out the cost

Example. You run a 4 week second line race with a $200 prize for first and $100 for second. Last month the office added 20 second lines. During the contest it adds 30. If each line earns your agency $100 in its first year, the extra 10 lines earn $1,000. The contest cost $300.

Keep it friendly

  • Celebrate effort as well as wins. A shout-out for the biggest improvement keeps the middle of the board trying.
  • Don't let a contest pull people away from service. If cancellations rise during a sales race, the race cost more than the prize.
  • Rotate the measure each month, so different strengths get a turn.

Check what it did

When the contest ends, compare the measure with the month before and the same month last year. Look at what happened the month after too. A contest that pulls sales forward from next month did less than it looked.

How Agency Edge shows it

Agency Edge ranks your team on sales leaderboards by premium or by product line, and lets you start a private league with offices you know. Activity goals track the activities you set up, like quotes and calls, by person each day. See Start or join a league.
